We want to let you know about a new, up-and-coming legal magazine called Lawyer’d. Lawyer’d has been publishing articles for a while now online with quite the following, and they’ve got a great Instagram account. In their own words “We exist to bring you a compilation of law culture, lifestyle and perspective on a quarterly basis. Each issue features stories of some of our favourite influential lawyers, students, and legal professionals who are navigating the world of law and making their mark in a noteworthy manner.”

We’re looking forward to reading the first print issue being published soon – the legal sector needs a bit of lifestyle and culture, it’s not all suits, ties and desks any more! So, we were very excited when the Lawyer’d team approached us asking to profile Elephant Creative director Helen Hammond for their regular Lawyer Profiles. Below is the article from their website. Or you can view it over on lawyer’d.com

NAME:

Helen Hammond, director of legal marketing agency Elephant Creative.

AREA OF PRACTICE:

I specialise in marketing for the legal profession

COMPANY:

Elephant Creative is based in the UK but works with both US and UK law firms (and European) on marketing, PR, social media, design, directory submissions and digital marketing

MOTIVATION FOR A CAREER IN LAW:

Ironically (given the world in which we now work) – job security! I started my career working in online communities and e-learning. I thought I’d get a better ‘on the job’ education and more job security in a law firm, so I made the switch! I initially worked in-house with several top UK law firms, before setting up Elephant Creative,  I’ve been working in the legal profession for 15 years now.

LONG TERM GOALS:

I set up Elephant Creative to inject a little (much needed) plain English and common sense into legal marketing. I particularly enjoy working on trans-Atlantic projects and long-term goals include making sure this international growth continues.

DESCRIBE A TIME WHEN YOU’VE BEEN LAWYER’D AND HOW YOU OVERCAME:

Wow! Every partners meeting I’ve ever sat in… every website rewrite I’ve ever done… I’ve come to realise that it’s not just lawyers that speak their own language – marketing people do as well. When I’ve been ‘lawyer’d’ it’s usually been because I’ve fallen into the trap of speaking a language my audience doesn’t understand. If I want them to react positively and engage with the process it stands to reason I need to speak their language, not mine!

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR LEGACY TO BE?

I’m very proud that Elephant Creative is one of the first UK B-Corps (B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk. B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the non-profit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency). We found out about the programme working with BWB (a London law firm and the first law firm to become a B Corp). Being a B Corp doesn’t mean we aren’t interested in making a profit and ambitious growth, but it does mean we’re picky about the way we go about doing it. I’d like our legacy to be proving that you can be committed to a commercial and still make a positive difference alongside.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT LAWYERING, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Part of my 2017 plan was to inject some much needed ‘me time’ into my life. I’ve recently got into gardening and have surprised myself (and my very green-fingered mother) with how much I enjoy exploring the beautiful gardens in and around the Cotswolds, where I live. I’ve spent a lot of time, outside, planting up clouds of herbs and vegetables, as well as chasing after my labrador when he runs off with the plant pots and tools.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE, “I FEEL BAD ASS WHEN I AM:

Standing up in front of a room full of lawyers, trying to teach them to engage with clients via social media. If you can conquer a tough crowd like that you can take on the world – and win!
